However thoughts can be raised as to whether the treatment and conduct of criminal punishments during the 18 th and 19 th Century can be seen as adequate. Towards the end of the 19 th Century there can be seen the appearance of new punishment systems such as the increase in prisons and new ways of reforming criminals. In many cases, offenders were either sentenced to the death penalty or sentenced to transportation to Australia during the 18 th Century. Therefore punishment was taken extremely seriously in society in an attempt to keep criminality in order. Further crimes such as murder, assault and rape were also very common during this time period.

This therefore left those from the poorer classes with no other option than to turn to crimes such as theft and pocket picking. On the 21 st of July 1703, the jury convicted Dromett guilty of murder in court and his punishment was sentenced to the death penalty.ĭuring the 19 th Century crime played a large part in society due to many factors such as poverty. A Surgeon was sent to view the body where he believed the killer had left her with twenty one wounds around her neck and head.ĭromett later in court confessed that his wife followed him and provoked him to act out. When later being questioned by a Constable he showed him the bloody Sword where the officer said ‘Thou Villain, dost not thou see thy Wife’s Blood on thy Sword?’ to which Dromett did not deny it, but answered very little. Dromett took a Coach to London where he confessed the murder of his wife. Dromett murdered his wife by hitting her with the Hilt of a Sword to which she died instantly.
